What is a young carer?
A young carer is someone aged under 18 who cares for a friend or family member who, due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction, cannot cope without their support.
What might a young carer do?
- Practical tasks, like cooking, housework and shopping.
- Physical care, such as helping someone out of bed.
- Emotional support, including talking to someone who is distressed.
- Personal care, such as helping someone dress.
- Managing the family budget and collecting prescriptions.
- Helping to give medicine.
- Helping someone communicate.
- Looking after brothers and sisters.
What is the impact of being a young carer?
Being a young carer can have a big impact on the things that are important to growing up, including school attendance and attainment. It can be isolating as young carers have limited time for friendships, and it can be worrying and tiring.
Can the school help?
Yes, we’re here to support any young carers in our school to minimise the impacts on them and help them achieve their best. We have Young Carers Champions, we provide staff training to raise awareness, we have robust referral systems, and strong partnerships with external organisations who can help further.
