Author’s Day – Lakeside Arts Centre Friday 24th February
A group of Year 9 students were invited by Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature, First Story and the University of Nottingham’s Manuscripts and Special Collections department to take part in a series of workshops at The Lakeside Art Centre. The focus was on ‘What do we want to change?’ Students worked in small groups, with other schools, to produce individual pieces of writing on what they would change about their environment and society. These workshops were led by published writers and poets Manjid Sahota, Jim Hall and Darren Simpson who helped to develop the students’ ideas and voices. The afternoon was spent redrafting their writing to be shared with the whole group. A number of Beechdale students bravely stood up in front in their peers to perform their wonderful writing. It was an inspirational event where students demonstrated their resilience and curiosity. Students left the event with a tote bag of fiction and amazing memories of a creative and inspiring day.
