World Book Day
World Book Day came to Beechdale this year in a bright and colourful way and we were really impressed by how many students took part in the competitions on offer!
Tutor groups competed for the Best Tutor Room Door Design. Tutor groups either recreated their tutor read book cover or their own representations of what the book made them think about. The winning tutor groups received a new tutor group read totally of their choosing and five tutor groups will win a celebration breakfast for their efforts.
Students also competed to write the Best Book Review. There were two joint winners: Lorena in Year 9 and Kyra in Year 8, who won an Amazon Fire Tablet and a runner up, Ellie, Year 8, who won £20 Amazon Vouchers. All three wrote detailed accounts of a book they had read recently and showed a positive attitude to reading.
All students in KS3 also read the short story ‘New Boy’ throughout the day, culminating in watching the 10 minute film version. The story was chosen as it has relatable subject content of a refugee starting school in the UK and some of the issues this presents. It encouraged students to be empathetic and students were encouraged to infer their opinions on the various situations presented in the text.
The final excitement, however, was added by the Beechdale staff who dressed up in the most imaginative style, to try to make positivity around reading truly contagious to our students!
